Refurbishment and construction work in care homes requires extra consideration of patients and service users. This is even more important when working for mental health service providers, as patients have additional sensitivities and needs.

MGM Construction is a healthcare construction specialist. One of our most challenging contracts recently was refurbishing three care homes in Gateshead, run by Mental Health Concern, which provides specialist services on behalf of the NHS.

The key question in these sensitive environments is: can you carry out construction work effectively and efficiently without impacting on the care home residents, staff and users?

The Project

The project scope was to upgrade three care homes in Gateshead with two aims: to ensure vital systems were in line with industry regulations, and to provide a better environment for patients and service users.

This included:

  • Remedial electrical works
  • Upgrading the nurse call systems
  • Replacing external doors, fire doors and fire alarms
  • Installing new flooring
  • Internal refurbishment, redecoration and facelift work

The Challenge

The homes had to remain open throughout the duration of the eight-month project, in order to continue providing essential services to its clients. This meant that extra diligence was required while operating in a live patient environment. The team had to ensure minimal disruption to patients and staff at all times.

The Solution

MGM Construction Company worked with Mental Health Concern to provide a comprehensive plan for the project. This included segregating certain areas of the homes while the team completed the works, as well as working night shifts to carry out particularly noisy or otherwise disruptive tasks. This ensured that the entire project was delivered on time and on budget, with minimum disruption to staff or service users.

At MGM we take additional care when working in live patient environments – read more about this here.

Track Record

MGM Construction has a highly experienced team and a proven track record as a North East healthcare construction contractor. We are currently working on a £3.3m project at Northgate Hospital, in Morpeth, Northumberland. Before that we carried out a full office fit out and commercial refurb that also required plant replacement for a healthcare company, plus several smaller schemes within a live hospital environment.
